Namibia Prepares for COP29: Ministry Hosts Key Meeting and Secures NAD 1,775,000 Sponsorship for National Pavilion

Windhoek, Namibia – 16 October 2024 - Today, the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism (MEFT) held a crucial preparatory meeting in anticipation of the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The meeting, seen as a key milestone in Namibia’s preparations, focused on the country’s strategy for COP29, which will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November 2024. It brought together key stakeholders from the government, private sector, and civil society to discuss Namibia’s national priorities, including climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as other critical issues. These include the operationalisation of the Loss and Damage Fund, approved at COP28, and further technical work to implement carbon markets under Articles 6.2, 6.4, and 6 of the Paris Agreement.

In a significant moment during the event, sponsorships for Namibia’s pavilion at COP29 were officially handed over. The pavilion will be Namibia’s primary platform for showcasing its climate actions, fostering international partnerships, and presenting its sustainable development projects. Sponsorship contributions included:

  • Environmental Investment Fund of Namibia – N$1,000,000
  • Ninety-One – N$50,000
  • Namibia National Reinsurance Corporation (NamibRe) – N$30,000
  • Triple Capital – N$20,000
  • Climate Fund Managers – N$100,000
  • Hans Seidel Foundation – N$75,000
  • Bank Windhoek – N$300,000
  • Capricorn Foundation – N$200,000

In total, the sponsorship amounted to N$1,775,000.

Speaking at the event, Environmental Commissioner Mr. Timoteus Mufeti expressed gratitude to Namibia’s partners for their support: "We would like to thank our partners for their valuable contributions. As we prepare for COP29, we are united in our approach as a country. This meeting is crucial as it helps us solidify our national position on key issues, ensuring that when we go to Baku, we present a unified front." He added, “COP29 is an important opportunity for Namibia, as we are highly vulnerable to climate change impacts. The pavilion sponsorship will allow us to have a strong presence at the conference, where we will showcase our progress, foster partnerships, and drive future climate action.”

The pavilion sponsorship will enhance Namibia’s visibility at COP29, facilitating engagement with global stakeholders and bolstering the country’s ability to influence international climate policy. Namibia’s participation underscores its commitment to addressing climate change, while also emphasising the importance of increased climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity-building to achieve both national and global climate goals.

Additional topics discussed during the meeting included gender and climate change, insights from the COP28 back-to-office report, the proposed reporting template, COP29 pavilion protocols, and a draft program. A panel discussion featuring seasoned COP participants also took place, offering valuable reflections on regular conference engagement.

Delegates represented at the meeting included members from Parliament’s Standing Committee on Natural Resources, the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform (MAWLR), Ministry of Health and Social Services, Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation (MIRCO), Ministry of Works and Transport, National Planning Commission, Environmental Investment Fund of Namibia (EIF), Namibia Power Corporation (NamPower), Green Hydrogen Fund Managers, Triple Capital, Bank Windhoek, Capricorn Group, Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB), Hans Seidel Foundation, Standard Bank, United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), Kaoko Green Energy Solutions, Namibia Nature Foundation (NNF), and the Namibia Agronomic Board (NAB).
